Erin Brockovich

Erin Brockovich

Introduction of Erin Brockovich
Based on a true story, Erin Brockovich was released in 2000 and is the story of a single mother with no legal training and her fight against the American energy giant Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG & E). It was directed by Steven Soderbergh and starred Julia Roberts. For her role in this movie Roberts won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

The Story
Erin Brockovich was an unemployed single mother who had three children. She lost a personal injury lawsuit against a doctor in a car accident that he had caused. She asked her lawyer, Edward, about working in his office. He reluctantly gave her work as a file clerk in his office. One day she found some files regarding real-estate and medical records against PG&E. She thought it was a little strange and she started to delve in it after persuading Ed to allow her to research it. After the research, she discovered a systematic cover-up of the industrial poison of the town of Hinkley’s water supply. This was a threat to the health of the entire community. She found that PG&E was responsible for many illnesses of the people in Hinkley and successfully fought to bring the company to justice.

Comparison Between Female Roles in the Past and the Present
In the past, men regarded women as weak and a woman was forced to be patient in a men’s shadow. In other words, a woman didn’t have a say about anything and they couldn’t do what they wanted. The roles between men and women was determined strictly by men.

Nowadays, there are many independent women in the world. They can say anything, and they can do what they want. Women became strong. It is not only to change them but also their social status and position has improved greatly. However, the old way of thinking that put men over women is living all over the world even today.

In the movie, Erin worked very hard and her boyfriend mainly did the housework and took care of her children. They reversed the traditional roles. This movie will continue to be supported by many people who believe in the equality of women from now on.
