<p><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="color: #339966;">Confused History</span> discusses: The Potato!</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Yes, the potato originally came from Bolivia and Peru as it was grown by the Incas (the empire that also built Machu Picchu). The Incas potatoes, gold, empire, and land was then stolen by the Spanish who introduced the potato to Europe. During trading with the world, the potato was introduced to China who today is the largest grower of potatoes in the world.</span></p>

In Japan, salt is primarily from the sea. And in Ishikawa, where Kanazawa and Hokuriku University are, salt came mostly from the Noto Peninsula. The traditionally way of getting salt from the sea was stopped by the national government in 1909 but a few die hard salt makers hung around until 1959.<br />
<br />
Now there is at least one salt maker in the Noto Peninsula that makes salt the traditional way. This video shows how hard it is to get salt from the sea the traditional way.<br /><br />
It is also a chance for you to practice listening to Japanese, to learn about this family who has been making salt for six generations, and to see how to get salt from the sea.<br /><br /> By the way, 塩 - shio is 'salt' in Japanese. Enjoy.<br /><br />

They are loop, loopy, and loophole. Loop is a circle in a string or rope. It is also when a computer program repeats itself. Loopy means slightly crazy or slightly silly. A loophole is a way to escape some obligation. People often look for loopholes when they do their taxes, for example. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The four words for your <strong><span style="color: #339966;">Trilingual Lesson</span></strong> are:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">depict</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">detour</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">tour</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">duty</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">And the four sentences are: </span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">I took a detour. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">I didn't take a detour. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">Did you take a detour? <br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">Who took a detour?</span></li>

<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium; color: #ff0000;">Where's the restroom?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">You can use this in most English speaking countries but in <span style="color: #ff0000;">Word/Play</span> we will discuss the different words used to describe the restroom such as:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">restroom</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">washroom</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">men's room</span></li>

<li><span style="font-size: medium;">powder room</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">WC (water closet)</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">In your <span style="color: #ff0000;">Trilingual Lesson</span> we will introduce some colors (blue, green, yellow, and red) and sentences you may never need.</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">I have yellow eyes.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">I don't have yellow eyes.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium;">Do you have yellow eyes?</span></li>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium;">taciturn</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Your <span style="color: #339966;">Trilingual Lesson</span> has three words also related to being quiet. In fact, the same three words as in Word/Play. Plus sentences such as:</span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium;">He didn't give me tacit approval.</span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Who gave you tacit approval?</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium;">As an extra bonus, we learn how to say "He," "She," and "It" in Chinese.<br /></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Following the Trilingual Lesson we have a new feature. The <span style="color: #339966;">ESS Production</span>. The ESS Club is the English Speaking Society and many universities in Japan have an ESS Club. They hold speech contests, perform plays, and generally encourage the use of English at their schools. In their first production they are performing a short audio drama called The Wind and the Sun. </span></p>
