Hokudai/Cast 272: Winter Fiction?

Word/Play deals with words related to lies: fiction, ficticious, fictional, non-fiction, and untruths. Some times politicians mis-speak ~ a polite way of saying they told an untruth or a fiction.

Your Trilingual Lesson deals with Winter. Winter is coming. I like winter vacation. I don't like winter vacation. Do you like winter vacation? Who likes winter vacation?

We have several Interviews in English and Japanese that deal with Japanese and Kanazawa food.

Salt

Salt is an important part of life. In Japan, salt is primarily from the sea. And in Ishikawa, where Kanazawa and Hokuriku University are, salt came mostly from the Noto Peninsula. The traditionally way of getting salt from the sea was stopped by the national government in 1909 but a few die hard salt makers hung around until 1959.

Now there is at least one salt maker in the Noto Peninsula that makes salt the traditional way. This video shows how hard it is to get salt from the sea the traditional way.

It is also a chance for you to practice listening to Japanese, to learn about this family who has been making salt for six generations, and to see how to get salt from the sea.

By the way, 塩 - shio is 'salt' in Japanese. Enjoy.

Lyrics to 砂の器 by Chiiukokoneka
